A recipe for success: Using the Lumen Platform to achieve our customers’ desired outcomes and drive sustainability
Traditionally, Oklahoma and Texas are known for many things: great football rivalries, oil wells and some of the world’s best BBQ come to mind. Many companies who call Texas and Oklahoma home have become focused on making a digital transformation to the future and joining the 4th Industrial Revolution.
My role within Lumen is vice president and general manager for Texas and Oklahoma in what we call the “Red River Region” because of the clay-saturated river that divides the two states. I’m originally from Massachusetts, but as the saying goes in these parts, “I got here as fast as I could.” I’ve called this area home for over 20 years now, most of that time with Lumen.
Lumen serves many different types of clients in the Red River Region, likely far more diverse than you might realize. Of course, we support the energy sector which I’ll talk more about in a moment. Some might be surprised to know that the region also hosts major healthcare centers known nationally for their specialties of care and research programs, retailers who have both national and international footprints, a lot of high-tech companies and high-profile sports teams like the Texas Rangers, who turned to Lumen to equip their new smart stadium. All these businesses are working to transform how they operate in the 21st century and address new needs.
Every customer my team works with desires a different outcome, even customers within the same vertical. We provide a consultative approach that enables customers to build a tailored plan to meet their desired short-term goals and long-term outcomes.
This is an exciting time to be in this industry. We’re on the edge of a pivotal technology shift, from a centralized cloud model to more of a distributed hybrid edge cloud architecture. Every company is or must become a technology company. At Lumen, we are helping customers understand what it will take to get to that end state in three, five or even ten years. After that strategic work, we then build a roadmap that allows them to launch in that direction today.
Simplifying complexity, helping customers achieve their desired outcomes and seeing my Red River Region teams succeed is not just my day job. It drives me.
Cooking up a technology solution
Cooking for my family is another of my passions. As you might guess by my surname, Italian cuisine is very near and dear to me. On the weekend, you can often find me next to the outdoor pizza oven in my backyard, or in the kitchen trying a new recipe.
I enjoy cooking because of the challenge and complexity of bringing a variety of ingredients together into something greater than the sum of their parts. In cooking, no two dishes are the same even if the ingredients are largely similar. Different chefs will add their own touch. It might be a favorite spice or grandma’s secret method; even when the ingredients are the same the recipe might entail a different technique to prepare the dish.
Customers don’t come to us asking for a specific piece of infrastructure anymore. Like recipes and final dishes, they are all different and looking for specific outcomes that only apply to their unique situation.
In essence, we design a custom recipe together. Our Lumen team blends the elements of the Lumen Platform – adaptive networking, edge cloud, connected security and collaboration services – into a solution that meets the customer’s desired outcomes. In addition to the platform’s flexibility, our experts help our customer with every process step or technology that’s part of the plan.
How the Lumen Platform creates a path to sustainability
The Red River Region is taking a proactive role furthering Lumen’s sustainability vision. Internally Lumen is doing its part by building an energy-efficient global network, reducing energy consumption which will lead to lowered carbon emissions. Our internal efforts are detailed in our 2020 ESG report available at www.Lumen.com.
Lumen also helps customers become better stewards of the environment. The companies we serve in the energy sector have major efforts under way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We have begun working with several of them to deliver smart solutions that enable their carbon capture and renewable energy projects.
The proposed solutions use our adaptive networking, edge cloud and connected security platform pillars to create a data driven architecture that enables them to Acquire, Analyze, and Act on the massive amount of data created by their IOT architecture. There is a deep sense of pride in knowing that the Lumen technology platform is being used for the greater good of our planet. We’re cleaning up our planet and helping our clients modernize their businesses.
Let’s get together and discuss your desired outcomes. I’ll make us some pizza.
