New ITDM Survey Stresses the Importance of Choosing the Right Edge Computing Solution for your Organization
A new global survey conducted by analyst firm IDC and sponsored by Lumen Technologies and Intel Corporation stated that by 2023 over 50% of new enterprise IT infrastructure deployed will be at the edge rather than in corporate datacenters; and by 2024, the number of apps at the edge will increase by 800%. Businesses are realizing the importance of acquiring valuable data faster via edge solutions as a competitive differentiator, but other motivators such as cost of bandwidth, security/data protection, latency issues and regulation and compliance were also noted by the survey.
In fact, many executives are implementing short- and long-term goals to achieve the benefits of edge solutions as fast as possible.
Yet, despite the strategic imperative edge solutions provides, not all edge solutions are built the same. As IT departments develop a strategy, solutions are typically chosen based on their ability to achieve KPIs. This includes: speed and time to deployment, solution capabilities and benefits, customer support and service, pricing, compute capacity and customer success. (See Figure)
Out of the solution capabilities and benefits, the survey concluded that four garner significant interest and should be evaluated closely when an organization is choosing an edge solution:
- Edge storage solutions – A set of storage-as-a-service use cases that are involved in acquisition, analysis, and acting on valuable data created from various remote sources.
- Edge security solutions – A set of applications that are running at the edge to protect valuable data for workloads, mitigate attacks and minimize risk.
- Edge application delivery solutions – Enable distributed computing to support high-bandwidth applications and workloads, improve application performance, and support varying customer software development pipelines.
- Edge intelligent solutions – Vertically oriented and designed to achieve business-focused outcomes, integrating both edge and cloud technology with enterprise systems.
Lumen® Edge Computing Solutions excel in these four areas. With core assets including a large global network that is far reaching, exceptional security, and distributed cloud services, Lumen is ideally positioned to drive these key edge computing solutions. Additionally, our network is designed to deliver data to customer applications with near-zero latency, allowing organizations to truly capitalize on the data revolution and the advent of next-gen applications.
Ultimately, Lumen increases the value of organizations who are on their digital transformation journey by offering flexible choice of application and delivery options for edge computing solutions – building upon the hybrid IT stack from the cloud core to the edge.
